American speak

Many words and phrases have a different meaning across the Atlantic. For instance, when Americans say the first floor, they mean the ground floor, the second floor is really the first, and so on. (NB: NEVER ask for a packet of fags; ‘fag’ is a crude, slang term for a homosexual.) Here are a few everyday words to help you:

British Consulate-General, Miami

Top Five Travel Aware Tips when travelling to Florida, Puerto Rico & US Virgin Islands:

1       Secure appropriate travel insurance for the duration of your holiday. Hospital visits in the US can cost thousands of pounds out of pocket. Ensure you travel with enough medication to see you through your holiday.

2       Check your passport’s validity, fill out the emergency details page. Keep your passport safe at all times. Take a photo of it on your smart phone and send it to a relative or friend who may need to access it on your behalf. Don’t leave your passport, luggage or valuables unaccompanied in your rental vehicle.

3       The British Consulate-General, Miami, provides Consular Services to British nationals in Florida, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands when things go wrong abroad. Consular Services can assist in matters such as Hospitalization, Emergency Travel Documents, Death(s) and Arrest/Detention. Remember to respect local laws and customs.

4       The British Consulate-General, Miami can provide British nationals with an Emergency Travel Document to return home should your passport be lost, stolen or damaged. These documents are also available in Orlando via our Consular Agency at Orlando International Airport by appointment. Apply for one of these documents on 305 400 6400 or gov.uk/emergency-travel-document.

5       Hurricane Season runs from 1 Jun–30 Nov each year. For the latest Travel Advice updates, visit travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and follow us on Twitter @UKinFlorida. Phone 305 400 6400 should you require Consular Services during your holiday.
